101 Baby Wipe Uses

Am I the only one who grabs a wipe to clean everything? I remember having all these specific cleaners for certain things. Now, I grab a wipe. Spit-up in the floor . . . wipe. Tomato sauce on the wall . . . wipe. Finger paint on the dog . . . wipe. Dust on my laptop or a 2 year old little boy sprinkle by the potty . . . yep, you guessed it, I grab a wipe. Even when I clean with real grown-up stuff, I find myself drawn to the convenience of wipes. In desperation, I am just now discovering that they make them for floors, glass, dusting furniture, leather, and bathrooms. Clean and toss is the way to go!

How much is too much?

When witnessing a parent being verbally abusive, at what point should you do something? I recently left a store with tears running down my cheeks. While in line, I heard this woman cursing and emotionally bashing her four year old daughter. I am the first one to admit that there have been occasional outbursts of frustration in my home but you seriously have to know when to lock yourself in the bathroom and have a good cry. In this case, sadly, I think what I saw was pretty much her daily life. What amazed me was how well the child was behaving in the beginning and how the mother didn't seem satisfied until they were both upset. As the little girl became unglued, the mother seemed to have more fuel feeding her fire. I almost said something several times during this episode but then wondered if the child would pay for it later. So, I was terribly upset and often recall the desperation in those big brown eyes. I hugged my little ones tight when I got home and wondered if I had done the right thing by not interfering. How much is too much? Is it wrong to tell strangers how to behave?

ICE for Emergencies

No, I'm not talking about the cold stuff. Ever wonder what would happen to your kids if you were involved in some kind of accident and they were with you. What if you were unable to care for them or coulnd't even tell someone who to call? If you have a cell phone, you can have some sense of security by doing something very simple. Under your contacts, enter "ICE" (which stands for In Case of Emergency) and put in as many numbers as it will hold, starting with one you know will be answered. Paramedics and law officers have been able to contact family members this way countless times and EVERYONE should know about it. Please pass this information along as it may save precious time if anything should ever happen. As moms, we can do one more tiny thing for our kids that means so much.

"Third Hand Smoke"

New research has shown that parents who smoke may be exposing their children to nicotine and other chemicals, even though they smoke outside. Apparently about 90% of the perticles from cigarette smoke stick to surfaces including skin, hair, and clothes and are also transferred to the furniture and air inside the home. These chemicals can be inhaled or absorbed through the skin of non-smokers. My baby has been diagnosed with Reactive Airway Disease (baby asthma) so I'd like to know if anyone has heard of this or knows more about the potential risks. How do you tell family members who smoke (like mother-in-laws) that they can't touch the kids without a shower and clean clothes?

Weight Loss on Vinegar Diet - Fact or Fiction?

I have to tell you that for me, it works! I started taking a swig of apple cider vinegar once a day because of it's general health benefits but I started dropping pounds. In two weeks, I went from my dreadful post-baby size sixteens to being able to squeeze into a pair of pre-baby size twelves. It wasn't pretty but . . . it has created new motivation and I'm actually eating better and trying to walk every day. I have to admit that on my schedule as a single working mom, diet and exercise are not at the priority level they should be. The medical professionals will tell you that vinegar will not make you lose weight but it has been used throughout history for that very purpose. Even if it's all in my head, I'm going to continue my regimen. Have you tried this foul tasting but easy-as-pie weight loss remedy? Any luck?

Parent Participation

I can't believe I'm the only parent at my 2 year old son's daycare holiday parties! It has happened at Halloween, Christmas, and now Valentine's Day. I bake yummy, healthy treats and get a babysitter for my daughter so I can go to the school and be with him during these special times. I take pictures and share a plate with him. It's very special mother-son time and I can't imagine not being there. But I'm the only one! What is keeping parents from participating in their childrens' lives? Alot of the stay-at-home moms don't even come. Anybody else frustrated by this? Maybe it's not normal for parents to go to these things?
